I’ve been feeling sort of a battle inside of me lately. There’s a lot of really amazing things that I want to do, and that I want to be a part of, but now that I’m home, I’m really wanting to address the spiritual side of my life.

I think that maybe it’s part of being young, or maybe being an idealist – that part of your brain just keeps screaming I CAN CHANGE THE WORLD [if I just had the chance]. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how to change the world. Not in a become-a-Senator-and-make-new-laws kind of way or in a work-for-the-UN kind of way, or even a sell-everything-and-move-to-the-hood- kind of way, but in a different way; something that you can point to and say, “Look, we did that, and it mattered. It mattered to him.”

This is a really powerful interview that NPR did with K’Naan on the famine in Somalia.
“I don’t think that we should speak about those kinds of numbers, because what it does is it turns off the part of the mind that probably transmits that information to the heart. I think we need to talk about this in ones and twos. It gets normalized in a way. And I feel that we’re not doing the people that are suffering any justice.”
